With Lilith Manethrall's help, the weary travelers make their way to Manhome. There Thomas Covenant meets a young Winhome girl of 15 named Gay. Gay tries to care for Covenant but her efforts are in vain. Thomas Covenant insists on continuing his hunger strike, still not willing to accept the reality of The Land. However, Gay's attention unexpectedly forces Thomas Covenant to confront long since repressed memories of Lena.
